Call for papers
J.R.R. Tolkien is an author who excites diverse critical response from both academia and non-academia. Although best known for The Lord of the Ringsand other tales of his Middle-earth ‘legendarium’, Tolkien’s oeuvre extends to Anglo-Saxon studies (to which he contributed much as an academic), essays on fairy tales, poetry, children’s tales and non Middle-earth fantasy.
In recent years academic interest in the fantasy genre has increased dramatically. Likewise fandom studies are developing as fan productions proliferate, particularly since Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings.
“The Return of the Ring” is a conference which aims to bring together scholars and researchers from across the globe to share their expertise and interest in any Tolkien-related area of study such as linguistics, fantasy, literature, education, media & culture, fandom etc. It will also be a gathering of musicians and artists inspired or influenced by Tolkien, and of those interested in any aspect of Tolkien and his work. The conference will include several academic streams as well as other events and is run by The Tolkien Society, the long-established literary society devoted to the promotion and understanding of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.
The Tolkien Society invites submissions of proposals for papers, panels and workshops. To apply, please fill in the form by 11th November 2011. For more information about the programme, or to discuss any aspect of your proposal, please contact Meggy McMurry at programme@returnofthering.org.
We also invite applications for the Christine Davidson Memorial Lecture, for which the selected recipient will receive some financial assistance to attend the conference. If you wish to apply, please read the information about the award and the criteria for entry.

leider musste unser geschätzter Ehrengast Prof. em. Dr. Darko Suvin aus persönlichen Gründen die Teilnahme an der Konferenz absagen. Er übermittelte uns letzte Woche sein Bedauern und seine besten Wünsche für den Erfolg der Konferenz, wird aber nicht in der Lage sein, die Keynote halten zu können.
Um aber die Position der Keynote-Rede nicht als Lücke bestehen zu lassen, und um dem Programm und dem Anspruch der Konfernz gerecht zu werden, haben wir uns bemüht, einen adequaten und eloquenten Ersatz für Prof. Suvin zu finden und sind überglücklich, einen Sprecher gefunden zu haben, der diesen Ansprüchen mehr als gerecht wird.
Es ist uns also eine große Freude, Dr. Brian Stableford als neuen Keynote-Sprecher anzukündigen. Dr. Stableford ist als Autor von mehr als 50 Romanen der Science Fiction, des Horror und des Fantasy-Genres (u.a. die Emortality-Reihe) bekannt geworden, hat aber auch im Gebiet der Fantastikforschung extensiv veröffentlich und zuletzt mit dem Historical Dictionary of Science Fiction Literature und dem Historical Dictionary of Fantasy Literature einen wichtigen Beitrag geleistet. Als Titel seiner Keynote schlug er uns folgendes vor:

Dear participants,
we regret to announce that our guest of honor Prof. em. Dr. Darko Suvin had to cancel his participation in the conference due to unforseen personal reasons. He sends his regret and sincerely wishes the conference and the GFF to be a great success, even though he will not able to attend and give his presentation.
In order to fill the gap that Prof. Suvin’s cancellation opens, and so as to fulfill the promise that program and planing have given, we have struggled to find an adequate and eloquent replacement for the keynote. We are overwhelmed and sincerely thankful to have found so much more, a speaker that can exceed the expectations and award us with a great lecture.
It is thus our great pleasure to announce Dr. Brian Stableford as our new keynote-speaker. Dr. Stableford is not only the author of more than 50 novels in the genres of Science Fiction, Horror Fantasy (e.g. the Emortality-series), but has also made his mark as a critic in the field of research in the Fantastic. His latest contribution here are the Historical Dictionary of Science Fiction Literature and the Historical Dictionary of Fantasy Literature, both of which provide a great historical overview on genre specific terms and usage. He has proposed to give a talk on:

We are looking forward to hearing this lecture and are deeply thankful for his spontaneous and kind response.
